Frequently Asked Questions

After you contact me I will get back to you as soon as possible to discuss the project you have in mind. This can happen via call/videocall or email. Meeting in person can also be arranged. Depending on the project, I might ask you to send me a brief description of the work you want me to illustrate (abstract and/or letter to editor are generally enough), so that I can already get an idea of the topic. During our chat we will discuss your idea for the project as well as deadlines and requirements. Once this is defined I can provide a quote and start working on the illustration.
During the first stages I will be happy to keep you in the loop of the creative process with sketches or questions, so that we can better define together the concept and style of the image. When a general direction is clarified I will produce a first version of the illustration, on which we can then refine details. We will work on the illustration until you are satisfied with the result. In case the number of revisions would lead to a substancial increase of my inital quote I will let you know and we will decide together how to proceed.
Once we reach a final version I will send you the high resolution file via email. At this point I will also send your invoice, which would need to be paid within 2 weeks, unless we previously agreed on a different deadline.

This depends on the kind of project and on my availability. For example, a journal cover takes me 3-4 days of work, but generally I have other projects already on, therefore you should count around 2 weeks. Publication figures generally need less time. Needless to say, the earlier you contact me the better. However, don’t hesitate contacting me even if you have a tight deadline, I might still be able to help.

It’s very difficult to give a precise estimate, as the price greatly depends on the kind of illustration and the level of detail. To give a very general idea, usually a figure like a graphical abstract is around 600€, while a 3D journal cover is more around 1000€. After our initial chat I will be able to give a more precise quote based on your specific case.

You are free to use the illustration as you want, how many times you want and wherever you want. The copyright, however, stays with me, unless otherwise agreed. This mainly means I can also use the illustration, for example I can post it in my social media and website. Of course, if the figure represents sensible and unpublished material I will not publish it until I get a go from you.

I will not disclose sensitive or unpublished work. If needed, I can sign a confidentiality agreement.

Of course! What you see here or in my social media are just examples. I’m happy to work on any kind of illustration and style. If you have a specific style in mind let’s talk about it, maybe show me some pictures as example and I’ll work with that.

My background is in physics, but during my master and PhD I worked also on topics related to material science and chemistry. This means I have a deeper scientific knowledge in these subjects, but it doesn’t mean I can’t work for projects in other fields. Indeed my formation as scientist allows me to also understand concepts and results belonging to fields different from my own. I’m a very curious person and I love to work on science from many different fields, so, whatever your field is, feel free to contact me!
